Maybe: In an unofficial study during residency only 5% of kids presenting with ear tugging had otitis media. Some had teeth coming in.The dark residue is likely wax. Some kids with poor Eustachian tube function will get pressure on their eardrum during a cold.The only way to be sure is to have him examined.
