Apply ice first: Usually, it's best to apply ice after trauma for the first day, to prevent local hematoma (bleeding, often associated with a purple discoloration); then, when any bleeding has stopped, one should apply heat to bring more blood flow to the area for healing. If pain persists, it should be examined and possibly X-rayed (or MRI), searching for a fracture. Tylenol is the preferred pain med.
