Ferritin: Ferritin is the storage protein for iron. It is also a reactive protein, which can be elevated by factors including infection or inflammation, etc. Ferritin above 200-300 ng/ml is considered elevated. However, mild elevation of ferritin rarely has any clinical meaning. If ferritin above 1000 ng/ml coupled with iron saturation >45%, we may need to evaluate for iron overload.
