Count the calories: If a person is eating a varied and healthy diet, but is gaining too much weight, he can do a food and drink diary to count his calories for 1-2 weeks. By being aware of how many calories are in each of his foods, he will be eating more healthily in the long run. His primary care doctor can review the dietary diary, and probably order some lab tests to check thyroid hormone and blood sugar, etc...

Not Normal: If you haven't changed your diet or routine or meds, (and not pregnant, but @ 50 probably not), it is time to see a physician for a full medical exam and a battery of tests.
