A member asked:

If hiv and hepatitis c are blood borne diseases, how many people develop them?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

In the USA?: Here in the us, about 1.2 million people have hiv, and about 5 million people have hepatitis c. Each year, about 50, 000 people are newly infected with hiv, and at least 20, 000 people get hcv (this number could be a lot higher, we are not sure). In the 1960-1980's, about 250, 000 people a year got hcv because of contaminated blood transfusions, drug use, etc. So it is lower now but still should be 0.
