A member asked:

Are any meats contagious with coronavirus? is it safe to buy and eat meat in china, or is wiser and safer to eat just vegetables for a few months?

Basics: The novel coronavirus is a respiratory virus. Although some initial reports suggested it came from eating bat meat from an open market this was never confirmed. The germ is passed person to person from close respiratory contact and likely from contaminated fingers tainted by fresh virus. Tainted fingers can contaminate any food product, so I doubt avoiding meats is a worthwhile practice.

Cooked is safest: COVID-19 is still being studied, but the WHO says that previous outbreaks of related coronaviruses such as SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV did not have transmission through food consumption. There have not been reports of transmission of this new coronavirus through food. The WHO says typical cooking (70 degrees C) stops coronaviruses.
