Arthritis issues: Arthritis in general will involve inflammation of vertebral surfaces, and b/c of the "bone to bone " contact, bending or twisting slightly will make the sound described. Some movements which will occur while reclining are different than keeping erect posture while awake and place articular surfaces in direct contact with arthritic changes in bone, causing the sound. Spinal fusion may stop this.
