Doctor can examine: If one's primary care doctor suspects bacterial bronchitis or pneumonia, an oral antibiotic will likely be prescribed. Sometimes asthma meds such as albuterol inhalers and anti-inflammatories like corticosteroids are also needed. If doing well on treatment, a mild residual cough can be around for 2-3 weeks, but one should be much improved after the first week. For bad symptoms, the ER helps.
