About older guys: A person in his 70's with changes in pooping needs to be evaluated by his primary care doctor. If the changes are new and they all go away after using some OTC treatment for constipation, and then they don't return, it might just be temporary constipation. Otherwise, his doctor will want to be sure there is not colorectal cancer. That said, the effectiveness of laxatives does not rule out cancer.
