Mouth sores: Possibilities include canker sores or viral stomatitis. The actual cause of canker sores is unknown. Try gargling with warm salt water or rinse mouth with maalox. Your physician may prescribe a corticosteroid gel to apply to sores.

Apthous ulcers : These are small shallow ulcers that can happen on tongue and inside of mouth sparing the lips and the gums. Topical steroids will help. You need the prescription from your PCP as they are not OTC.
