Most are gut virus: There are dozens of gut virus strains that trigger such diarrhea 1-3X/yr to the age of 5 & less thereafter. They may or may not be associated with fever, belly pain or vomiting. It could be another issue, but will likely fade gradually. I would stop the milk for a few days since the lactose sugar it is poorly digested in diarrhea & could act as a laxative (temporarily). Watch for blood and mucus in the stool, and discuss a culture if this occurs, with your PCP. Most self limited diarrheal illnesses in this age group are caused by viral illness. Avoid dairy products, discuss a probiotic and continue the diet described. Usually there is a 10-14 day period of improvement. Continue to provide clear fluids including Pedialyte to avoid dehydration.
