Possibilities: This could be a middle ear infection pushing the eardrum out to cause pain. It could be simple fluid retained after the Eustachian tube wouldn't drain it allowing a vacuum to such the drum in. It could be a bug or infection in the canal or a bite on the ear itself. Mild heat to the side of the head can provide temporary relief but an exam is required to discover the cause & treat properly.
