A 38-year-old female asked:

is it possible to be poisoned or develop allergy to potassium iodine after two months? just realized there is 290 mcg in my daily prenatal that i'm taking for the past 2 months. i have hypothyroidism & been feeling a bit sick in my stomach lately.

Unlikely: With hypothyroidism, you need to recheck your status daily, and if you feel nauseated on a daily basis, get a check up and maybe recheck your thyroid status with your endocrinologist as a safety measure. I doubt it’s the potassium iodide, but being vigilant is a good idea here

Follow up: Your condition may be related to your pregnancy rather than hypothyroidism.

My 5 year old daughter is complaining of "stomach" pain. No nausea, and her whole abdomen seems to be tender to the touch. Last bowel movement was yesterday. Normal appetite. Sleeping more than usual. No fever. It's hard to tell what's real & what's

Abdominal pain: Is there a histaory of abdominal trauma? What has she eaten or drank today? Regardless, first order is to induce a bowel movement since she hasn't had one today. Observe for another hour or two. If the stomachache worsens, a shift in the location of the pain occurs and/or she develops vomiting or fever, it will be best to have her evaluated at the ed tonight.

I would agree. If she's tender all over it could be something serious like a ruptured appendix. Get her to the Emergency Department.

Bladder infection seemed to clear up with potassium citrate after a few days it returned and I retreated the symptoms improved however not at night?

Suppressed, not kill: The potassium citrate may have suppressed the bugs from growing and thus contributed to the symptom improvement, but it did not destroy the bugs. After stopping the citrate, the bugs again able to grow/multiply and thus return of your symptoms. I would recommend seeing a doc for a quick test/culture and antibiotic treatment. Don't waite too long as it may get worse. Good luck.

How does hypokalemia affect leg muscle endurance activities like running and swimming? With low potassium can you still build muscle?

Muscle cramps: You need proteins to build and maintain muscle, but you need to right balance of fluids and electrolytes to have good muscle function. When your potassium is low, you are more likely to experience muscle cramps and fatigue.

Many with low K get such cramps they cannot exercise enough to build muscles.

Kidney cyst or tumor?, most likely? Too small 2 biopsy rt now, but blood work reported kidney not working so great & high potassium level in blood?

Dr. Simon Kimm

Difficult to say.: The best test for determining a cyst or tumor by imaging is a ct scan with contrast. If your kidney function is poor, this may not be possible since contrast can adversely affect the kidneys. Work with a urologist to determine the best type of imaging (ultrasound, mri, etc.) & a schedule to follow the mass over time. In the meantime, work to find ways to improve or stabilize your kidney function.
