A member asked:

Hi there. i am about 6weeks pregnant and i am wanting to the right vitamins. i have just bought the "preg omega plus". it says it has 500ug of folic acid. is this enough ? i am worried as my younger sister was born with spinal bifida.

Check with ObGyn Dr.: Depending on local issues (such as how much folate is added to foods) the recommended dose for women's folate supplements are ~400 mcg/day for those who might become pregnant, 400-600 mcg/day for those already pregnant, and 4-5 mg/day (10 times more) for women at high risk for getting a baby with a neural tube defect. One can ask her Ob-Gyn doctor whether a spina bifida sister means high risk.
