Doctor can recheck: One's primary care doctor can recheck to see what is causing the problem. An ear discharge that is not merely oily wax, can be from deeper in the ear, meaning the middle ear space. A discharge can also be from the canal skin (called otitis externa). The treatment may be different depending on where the discharge originates from. With persistent discharge, the doctor might do a culture test.
