EBV infection: Most Epstein-Barr virus infections cause no symptoms; a minority of newly acquired infections cause infectious mononucleosis. All EBV infections are permanent, i.e. latent (inactive) infection persists and is present in almost all persons beyond age 30-35. Most people have no further problem, but reactivation sometimes occurs, expecially in immune deficiency, advanced cancer, and so on.
