Pain & swelling: A sprained ankle occurs when there is a stretch or tear of the tough bands of tissue (ligaments) which help hold your ankle bones together. Pain and swelling of the ankle indicates a possible sprain. However, you should be examined at a medical clinic because the severity of the sprain determines what type of treatment is indicated. I wish you well with your health!
