A member asked:

I injured my thumb and there has been pain, swelling, and bruising at the base of my thumb for over 24 hours. how do i know if its sprained or jammed or broken?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

X-Rays: X-Rays are an excellent method to assess if damage was done to a bone, it basically shows the structure of the bone and depending on the quality of the machine you can get details of the tissue surrounding the bone. To better assess if damage was done to tendons (sprain) or muscle the most accurate way is with a MRI, this shows a very detailed image of the lesion but it is way more expensive
