Hearing test: A hearing test performed in your physician's office is a starting point in the evaluation. An examination may reveal scarring and the otoscopic examination can be performed in the office.

The mechanism: In good health the middle ear has an air filled space with walls lined by cells that make mucus. This mucus drains through the Eustachian tube to the throat but the tube also allows air into the space. When the tube is swollen, air loss can cause a vacuum on the eardrum that causes pain. Yawning lets air in=stops the pain.
