A member asked:

Hemoglobin level getting lower despite being prescribed iron tablets, at 20wks pregnant it was 10.9, at 22 weeks it was 10.1 and it is now 9.6 at 24wks pregnant how low is too low?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Hemoglobin ?'s: Anemia is very common in pregnancy, but your body compensates for chronic low hemoglobin and allows progression of pregnancy without major effects on the fetus. Iron supplements are helpful, but see your OB physician for an evaluation, since most pregnancies can sustain a hemoglobin of 9.6-10.5 without problems.
