Doctor can examine: Doctor can check for strep throat. Loss of voice is often viral. Cough meds are for decreasing the urge to cough, due to tickling, mucus, or mild throat irritation. Coughing is desired and is needed when there is mucus lower in the throat, or coming from the lungs (otherwise, mucus may stay in the lungs longer). Menthol lozenges that have anesthetic can help. Guaifenesin with DM lessens cough.
