Dr. can check throat: Hard to guess the cause. Throat symptoms can be from a strep throat infection (antibiotics are needed), a cold or other virus (antibiotics usually not used), allergies or irritants, sinusitis, stomach acid reflux, etc... Usually, a person sees the doctor if the throat is bothersome, recurrent, or doesn't go away quickly (mainly to check for strep and to see if sinusitis might be a cause).

Upper respiratory : Yellowish white sputum with loss of voice is usually viral. If you have more thick, green mucous and fever, this points more towards bacterial.

Viral more likely: Without fever or swollen glands, most likely you have a viral illness. Use humidified air, warm soothing liquids, nasal saline, fluids to control symptoms. If the cough is not improving in three to five days or if it is associated with a fever, please see your physician right away.
