Depends on details: If in lower back, some causes of pain there include: back muscle strain, back ligament sprain, fractured vertebra (spondylolysis), slipped vertebra (spondylolisthesis), herniated disc, spinal stenosis, spinal arthritis, urine infection, kidney infection or stone; tumor in the spine, kidney, or elsewhere; fibromyalgia, etc... With such a big list of possibilities, one's doctor needs to evaluate.

Med exam: Some things you can try at home for back pain include a warm shower with the water aimed at your back, a heating pad (insure that you don’t get burned), stretching & Tylenol or NSAID’s. If your pain is severe or chronic, a medical evaluation would be prudent. Acupuncture & massage can be beneficial for some types of back pain.
