A member asked:

I am allergic to ceftin, cipro, macrobid, sulfa, penicillin, floxin and biaxin. my doctor says i have an uti but she can't prescribe anything because of my allergies. she says drink lots of water. isn't there some antibiotic i can take?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Of course: The urine can be cultured to see what bacteria is in there, and which antibiotics can be used. If needed, an allergist can check for true allergies to antibiotics, and help select the safest one to use. If UTI symptoms are slight and they go away without antibiotics, that's ok... as long as a patient does close follow-up to check for recurrences or other bladder, kidney, vulvo-vaginal issues.
