Doctor can examine: A cough that's not getting better can be checked by a primary care doctor, to see if there is an infection (viral, bacterial, etc...), an allergy problem (various meds are helpful), an asthma problem (can consider trying asthma inhalers), stomach reflux, a heart problem, etc... A good exam helps decide if there is pneumonia. Worrisome shortness of breath usually means a trip to the ER is needed.
