A member asked:

What's the difference between thymus hyperplasia and thymoma? how can one differentiate using ct scans? what are the causes for hyperplasia and is it dangerous?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

The cells: The thymus is a gland located upon the heart, it has immunologic functions. Hyperplasia means that normal cells are growing in numbers, whereas tumor cells (thymoma) have different characteristics compared to normals. On CT scans they have different radiologic characteristics and size. Hyperplasia can be related to hyperthyroidism or Graves disease, and thymoma to Myasthenia Gravis.
