A member asked:

I have been losing muscle mass around my body for a couple of years now. i have had a few dental issues the past few years with a bit of gum disease and a broken tooth i have been waiting to fix. could this be the cause?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Probably not: Inflammatory/infective dental problems, such as gum disease, and the traumatic problem of a broken tooth, do not cause loss of muscle mass. That can be due to poor diet, improper supplements, systemic diseases/conditions. You need a full physical work-up by an internist. You need to assure optimum oral health. Perhaps a Periodontist can help. Evaluation by a nutritionist also advisable.
