Hi. my 5 month old is having diarrhea with traces of blood mucus. discomfort only sets in at night after sleep, otherwise no evidence of illness during the day. question is whether this is severe enough and warrants a visit to the paediatrician?

Probably: Bloody mucus in loose stools can be a sign of an infection by salmonella /shigella or other agents. These would be very worrisome at that age. I would want to see him to sort this out.
