Not uncommon: The incidence of the kidneys fused at the bottom (horseshoe) is about 1:500 and is generally asymptomatic, but it does suggest a fetal development failure, and about 1/3 children may also have minor blood vessel or chromosomal abnormalities. Problems that can arise in horseshoe kidneys as well as normal shaped kidneys are reflux, infection, blockage of the ureter to cause hydronephrosis.
