Depends on site/type: The diagnosis of a cancer depends upon the location in the body and type of tumor. Most diagnoses begin with physical examination by a healthcare provider. Depending upon the location and type of potential tumor, imaging studies may then be ordered such an an xray or ct scan or ultrasound. After this, a biopsy (cell or tissue sampling) is usually performed in a laboratory.
