Pills. Cream or gel.: Fever blisters happen in places at or near the original herpes-1 infection. An original infection tends to happen in childhood, and causes sores on the lips and gums, plus sometimes the nostrils and facial areas near the nose and mouth. Recurrences happen on some of those original areas, usually on the lips. Prescription anti-viral pills are sometimes needed. Creams or gels help a little bit.
