Is it normal for the knee to shift and painfully lock when standing? i would think it is not. my knee feels very unstable with swelling.

No: It's not normal. Sounds like a torn cartilage and most likely an MRI of your knee will be required. Suggest a visit to an Orthopedic surgeon but speak with your PCP who may wish to order the MRI prior to a referral. Hope this is helpful! Dr Z
