Extremely rare: The macrolide antibiotics (clarithromycin, azithromycin, others) can prolong the QTc interval on EKG, possibly raising risk of serious cardiac arrhythmia. However, actual arrthythmias are rare and research shows no actual increased sudden death rate in people on these drugs for short periods, e.g. 1-2 weeks. If concerned, discuss with the doc prescribing the clarithromycin or a cardiologist.
