Knee injury: The swelling may be from bleeding under the skin, inflammation of the bursal sac, or a hairline fracture. Intermittent icing for 48 hours usually is effective. However, if persistent or increasing swelling, increasing pain or redness, or significant pain on weight bearing occurs, he should be evaluated by a physician or orthopedic surgeon.
