A member asked:

My son was hit on a knee by a hockey ball on saturday, if it is just an impact injury how long should it take for the swelling to start going down (with icing, anti inflammatories...)?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Knee injury: The swelling may be from bleeding under the skin, inflammation of the bursal sac, or a hairline fracture. Intermittent icing for 48 hours usually is effective. However, if persistent or increasing swelling, increasing pain or redness, or significant pain on weight bearing occurs, he should be evaluated by a physician or orthopedic surgeon. Appropriate testing and treatment will be given.
