Petechiae or emboli?: Without a photo or exam, one can only make a guess at the cause of the spots. Purple spots are consistent with tiny broken blood vessels (petechiae), but is unlikely to occur in only one leg. A more likely cause is emboli, which are small clots in the artery that have traveled to the small vessels or thrombosis of a vein in the leg. Please seek urgent evaluation.
