About 12 weeks: Fractures heal over a long period of time (sometimes up to a few years), but the bulk of the healing occurs in the first 6 to 12 weeks. Many spine surgeons will brace these injuries, but that may not be necessary in many cases unless the spine is kyphotic (bent forward). Of course, individual cases can vary. Compression fracture: Vertebral compression fractures resulting from osteoporosis in an elderly population will heal with time. This can be from 6 to 12 weeks. However if the person with the fracture is in unremitting pain by 6-8 weeks, i believe that a procedure like kyphoplasty can be used. This is a minimally invasive procedure that can be done to reinforce the vertebrae with bone cement from the inside.
