A member asked:

I am coughing up blackish brown specks in my phlegm following 2 courses of antibiotics. is it normal to still be coughing this up?

Function of a cough: A cough is the natural body process designed to bring up debris from the deeper reaches of the lung. If you are a smoker or work in a smoky/dusty environment these represent deposits of debris in the deep reaches of your lung. When you have a lower respiratory infection more mucus debris is generated & the cough helps remove it. I would consider the specs just added cleanup & a benefit.
