Avoid spreading it: If it is herpes. If using a condom, note that a condom is just a plastic wrapper. Herpes can occur on other parts of the body, so whatever is not under the condom can still become infected. It's ok to have sex if one is a herpes carrier, but use as much protection as practical. Talk with the primary care doctor about anti-viral pills, and decide with one's partner what to do, and what not to do.

Agree with Dr. K: Your local symptoms are likely to be due to outbreak of herpes. You can transmit herpes to your sexual partner even when there is not apparent lesion. Do talk to your doctor about taking antiviral medication to control the infection. There is no cure but the lesions can be controlled.
