Definitely: Discectomy is very successful for the treatment of sciatic pain (shooting pain in leg past the knee) caused by disk herniation. Failure of nonsurgical management or persistent/severe pain even in the short-term are some reasons to proceed. Studies show that although long-term outcomes are similar, surgery resolves pain much more quickly than nonsurgical allowing quicker return to function.
