Usually early on: One of the reasons pancreatic cancer is often fatal is because there is no simple way to screen for it and it is usually diagnosed late in the disease process. Pancreatic enzymes such as lipase and amylase wont be elevated until the tumor physically blocks the pancreatic duct. These enzymes are also elevated in, and used to diagnose cases of pancreatitis. Pancreatitis is not pancreatic cancer.
