No: Hiatal hernia's occur when the valve partly formed by the diaphragm between the lower esophagus and the stomach becomes incompetent. This happens most commonly from overeating which causes the stomach to stretch so much that the valve is forced open and stomach contents start to reflux. In a true hernia part of the stomach move up thru the diaphragm. If you have one they would see it on EGD.
