Rib cage: A common cause of sharp, fleeting chest pains, especially brought on with a deep breath, is a pinched intercostal nerve or muscle that runs between 2 ribs. The associated tenderness points toward a cause in the rib cage and not the lung or heart. Another possibility is inflammation, injury or other pathology in a rib itself. Your physician should be able to identify the problem after examining you.
