Should be...: Unless you by raw on your own! Most restaurants have secure providers, so the risk is almost null. Hepatis viruses are the most common worry, but do not be frightened! Oysters are very high in nutrition!

It happens: Oysters are bottom feeders and periodically become carriers of potentially harmful bacteria. Outbreaks are sporadic. The more common are from the vibrio family that cause vomiting/diarrhea but fatalities have occurred. Typhoid & hepatitis are also a problem. Since there are no external signs that an oyster is tainted, you roll the dice with any consumption of raw material.
