A member asked:

How prevalent is molecular thyroid testing today? is it automatically done on indeterminate fna biopsy samples? how do you compare afirma vs. thyroseq? does private insurance cover such molecular thyroid testing?

Don't understand: I have not heard of this type of testing and wonder why the testing is suggested in the first place. A majority of thyroid function can be assessed with tests readily available in commercial labs. Even more important, even if the molecular testing is valid and indicated, what are you going to do with the results? If it makes no difference, why bother?

Very helpful .: The cytopatologists I use automatically send for molecular testing for indeterminate results of thyroid nodules. This is a very valuable tool for advising surgery or not. These test are covered by insurance.
