Depends on cause...: One's primary care doctor can check for medical causes. If none are found, then one can see a dermatologist, especially one specializing in hair restoration (some treatments: minoxidil, etc, ...). Medical causes may include: hormonal problems (low thyroid), seborrhea, alopecia areata, stressful illness. Other causes: genetic male or female pattern baldness, telogen effluvium, etc.

Many causes: This could be from so many different causes- hormone imbalances, pulling the hair too tightly, immune disorders and nutrition problems all are in the mix. Are you hormonally make or female? Is the hair loss mostly at the front vs at the top of your head? Have you also had skin changes? Is your energy level different? All of these will help guide your primary care doctor figure it out with you.

See dermatologist: First you must define the type of hair loss and its cause. Only then can you develop a strategy to deal with it. Do not bother with any consultation except with a pro: a dermatologist.
