Via nose: Naegleria fowleri infects people when water with the amoeba enters the body via the nose. This generally occurs when people go swimming or diving in warm freshwater places such as lakes and rivers. The amoeba travels up the nose to the brain where it destroys the brain tissue. The amoeba may also come from other sources such as an inadequately chlorinated swimming pool or contaminated tap water.
