Irritants/phlegm: A cough is a protective reflex in the lung designed to bring up mucus or debris from deep in the airways so it can be removed. Exposure to smoke/dust/fumes or allergens can trigger this.It is also a sign of past URI's that triggered mucus flow that needs to be removed.
