Sleep is optimal...: 44 y/o asks How much sleep is really needed, I sleep around 5 hours with occasional naps. i don't feel burnt out. Is this ok. As Newborns humans sleep the longest number of hours; sometimes 20 hrs of 24hrs. As one grows through childhood & maturity, the number of hours of sleep decrease. It is generally said that 7 to 8 hrs sleep is optimal for the adult but many can do with less.

Hard to say: Actual tests of your vigilance to tasks, coding skills and focus may show you are at or far below the expected proficiency for age. The sleep need of an individual is made up of both that for central nervous system needs and body repair. What your individual needs are can vary. Most studies site 7 accumulated hrs as the proper level.
