Every 10 yr, or...: An adult may get a Tdap tetanus shot now if he has not had a Tdap shot in the last 10 years, or if he only got the older Td shot in the past. The Tdap shot protects him from Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis (whooping cough). If a wound is deeper or contaminated, a doctor may choose to give a tetanus booster if the patient has not had a tetanus booster in the last 5 years.
