The basics: Scabies is a mite that tunnels under the superficial skin layers. People develop a rash in reaction to the poop the mite leaves behind in the burrows. Application of the medication will kill the mite, but it can take 6 weeks for the rash to heal. Sometimes a mild steroid cream (hydrocortizone) can help with healing and the itching.
